We are proud to have maintained a 100% pass rate since 2019, with a remarkable 94% of last year's matriculants earning a bachelor's pass. Our small teacher-to-learner ratio ensures personalized attention, while our rigorous IEB curriculum, cutting-edge laboratories, and dynamic co-curricular programs in sports and community service prepare our students not just for exams, but for life. Structure of the school

Our school is a combined school that serves students from Grade 0 to Grade 12. We offer a wide variety of subjects, giving students more options than you'd find at a typical school. Starting in Grade 4, all students have the opportunity to explore these subjects. This approach ensures every student gets a chance to learn and connect with our school's identity.

Who really are we?

Our History

Founded in 1981, Vela School made history as the first independent school in Umtata.
Born from a bold vision by members of the black community, we began with a simple but powerful belief — that every black child deserved a quality education beyond what the Department of Education offered at the time.
Over the years, we have dedicated ourselves to nurturing young minds, fostering a love for learning, and equipping our learners to excel academically, socially, and spiritually. Our journey has been marked by a deep commitment to excellence, integrity, and the development of the whole child.

Today, we are a thriving private co-educational school where academic excellence, Christian values, and future-focused skills prepare our learners to shine in life, not just in exams.

Our Philosophy

We believe education is more than the transfer of knowledge — it is the shaping of character, the awakening of potential, and the building of a strong moral foundation. At Vela School, we foster an environment where curiosity is encouraged, respect is practiced, and each learner is valued as an individual. Our Current State

Building a Foundation For Future Leaders Success is our being. For the past Five years, our school has celebrated a 100% matric pass rate, and in 2024, n outstanding 94% of our learners achieved a bachelor pass. This success is powered by out team of 35 teachers who ensure every learner receives personalized attention with our small teacher-to-learner ratio. We believe in a holistic education that extends beyond the classroom. Our learners choose from a variety of sports including athletics, cricket, soccer, volleyball, netball, and rugby. For those who prefer a different kind of challenge, our vibrant clubs - including chess, drama, debate, the SCO, and the writing club - offer opportunities for growth and community.

Our personal philosophy and the identity of the school. It is in our blood that no learner should ever finish school with inadequate skills, unable to tackle life, and struggle even to keep themselves alive. We build personal relationships with our learners to fully understand the neuroplasticity of each and every of our learners. This allows us to develop teaching strategies that cater for each and every of them.

Excellence is not an act, excellence is our identity. Our pass rate testifies: since 2019 we have had 100% pass rate, to top that off in 2024 we got 94% of the 100% pass being bachelors. We do not just teach school work. We inspire the learners to excel and impart our excellence to the learners.
